In the first part of the fly-through of cryptography as a field, we look at the past. What is cryptography and how was it born? How do the bald heads relate to it? What cryptographic algorithms were used from ancient times until relatively recently, when electronic computers revolutionized cryptography? Is it even possible to create a cryptographic algorithm that you can use without a computer and yet it resists the use of computers?

A fun and inspiring story about how I first tried to get rid of a Red Bull vending machine, then decided to keep it, and when that got boring, I taught it to accept cryptocurrencies. Sit back, relax, and join me on an adventurous journey through technical challenges—from running bitcoin full nodes to losing satoshis in third-party apps. And if you stay until the end, you'll discover the creation of the first vending machine that not only accepts cryptocurrencies exclusively but also operates as a Lightning Network transaction node.

The second part of the lecture will deal with contemporary cryptography. You use it practically all the time, even if you usually don't know about it at all. What algorithms are in use today, why and how? How are they actually created? How are today's ciphers being broken and how to defend against it?

Do you want to know, how paper napkins are made? The mundane object you probably use without thinkng is actually fairly complex to manufacture. Just folding them is a process far from trivial. Max will walk you trough the process it takes to convert role of paper to pack of tissues.

Tails is not - as the name might suggest - a furry Linux distribution. This distribution protects your privacy by connecting you to the network via TOR and forgetting everything when you shut it down. In this talk I will show you how to install Tails on a flash drive and how to use it.

The final part of the lecture will try to look into the future. What changes will quantum computing bring? Will we be able to keep secrets after the advent of quantum computers? What is post-quantum cryptography? But the bigger danger is political restrictions. Can we resist them too?
